Count job postings in Greece by sector in absolute numbers and trade comes first with 3,556, because trade has 256,405 active businesses. Per 1,000 businesses, IT comes first with 29.8 postings and trade drops to 4th. By regional unit, Thessaloniki with 50.2 beats Attica, the region around Athens, with 30.1.

I took every job posting published online for a position in Greece in September 2026, from Careerjet, LinkedIn and company career pages. After the clean-up, 22,720 unique postings were left. I matched them with the businesses in GEMI, the Greek General Commercial Registry, for the sector, and with the city of the position for the regional unit.

An IT business puts out more than four times the postings of a construction business. Industry is second with 22.7, and finance, real estate and professional services third with 17.8.

At the bottom are construction with 7.2 and education, health and arts with 7.1. I pulled the two twice on the same day, a quarter of an hour apart, and they swapped places: in the meantime education went from 707 to 700 postings. I count them as tied.

Sole proprietorships do not post jobs

The sole proprietorship column explains a large part of the order. The correlation of the rank by share of sole proprietorships with the rank by postings is −0.71 (Spearman, eight sectors). The top three sectors have about 50% sole proprietorships. Transport has 75.8%, the highest share, and ranks 5th.

The mechanism also shows directly. Sole proprietorships are 63.7% of the active businesses in the registry, and they put out 7.7% of the postings that matched a business. Each sole proprietorship counts in the denominator as much as an SA with two hundred employees. So a sector full of sole proprietorships comes out low, however many staff its companies are looking for.

New registrations and postings

In 2026 the sectors with the fastest growth in new registrations in GEMI are transport and construction. In postings they rank 5th and 7th.

sector new registrations, 01/01-31/07 2026 against 2025 rank rank in postings
Transport, storage +5.0% 1st 5th
Construction +3.9% 2nd 7th
IT, communications −0.8% 3rd 1st
Finance, real estate, prof. −7.6% 4th 3rd
Accommodation, food service −13.1% 5th 6th
Education, health, arts −16.7% 6th 8th
Industry −24.5% 7th 2nd
Trade −28.7% 8th 4th

The correlation of the two rankings is −0.10, which means no relation. The first time I ran it, with absolute numbers of postings, it came out at −0.76 and looked like a finding: the faster businesses open in a sector, the fewer the postings. But it was measuring the size of the sector. Trade has the most postings in absolute numbers, 3,556, and at the same time the largest fall in registrations, −28.7%.

Thessaloniki has 1.67 times the postings of Attica per business: 4,937 postings for 98,418 businesses, against 11,530 for 382,756. The Thessaloniki businesses with open postings come up in the search. The denominator does not explain it. Thessaloniki has more sole proprietorships, 63.9% against 54.6% in Attica, and if I take them out of the count the ratio rises to 2.10.

I did not find a cause. 85.7% of the postings come from Careerjet, which collects postings from other sites, and the link of each posting goes through its own address. It does not show which site each one comes from. If a site with many postings in Thessaloniki feeds Careerjet more than the others, the map shows it as demand. I can neither confirm nor rule this out.

Corfu is third with 20.0, at the end of the tourist season, followed by Boeotia, Achaea and Larissa, all around 16.5. At the bottom is Thesprotia with 0.8, that is, three postings. The last six regional units have from two to eight postings each, and two or three postings change their order.

Methodology

Postings with a publication date from 1 to 30 September 2026, from Careerjet (85.7% of the rows), LinkedIn and public company career pages on Greenhouse, Workable and Linq. Businesses: the active businesses in GEMI with a registered office in Greece, via bizlist.gr. Retrieved on 2 October 2026.

We left out 3,900 rows from recruitment agencies. They post on behalf of clients and would charge the postings to their own sector and their own registered office. A unique posting means the same title, the same company, the same city, so two identical positions at the same company count as one. The regional unit comes from the city of the position, with 93.6% coverage. 1,445 postings were left out, mostly in cities abroad or with a region instead of a city. The sector comes from the main activity code (KAD, the Greek extension of NACE) of the business that published the posting, and a business is identified for 58.1% of the postings. So the sector table rests on 12,431 postings, without the branches of foreign companies. With the 2026 KAD codes, car repair shops moved from 45.20 to 95.31-95.32. I count them in trade under both codes. Otherwise the sector of a repair shop would depend on when it changed its KAD.

The measurement covers one month because the earlier data is incomplete. Postings have been collected since June, but until 25 August the collection code dropped every posting that Careerjet had listed with a delay of more than two days. The lost postings cannot be recovered: Careerjet gives up to 990 results per city, and for Athens that goes back only 4.6 days. The date that counts is the last publication of the posting. An August posting that was published again in September counts in September, and a September posting that was published again in October drops out.

These are online postings, not hires. Whoever finds staff by word of mouth, through DYPA (the Greek public employment service) or with a paper sign in the shop window is not counted. This probably hits the provinces harder, and jobs on building sites and in kitchens. So construction, food service and the small regional units are likely below the real demand. And September is the end of the season, which favours the tourist regional units.
