What is a VIES check

VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the European Commission's official service for validating VAT numbers. Enter a number and the system returns whether it is valid and active for intra-EU transactions, along with the company name and address where available.

How the check works

  1. Select a country and enter the VAT number.
  2. The check runs in real time against the VIES database.
  3. You see whether the number is valid and any details returned.

VAT numbers across the EU

VIES covers all 27 EU member states. A VAT number carries a two-letter country prefix. For Greece that prefix is EL followed by the national tax number, for example EL999846755. VIES accepts the number with or without the prefix.

Beyond validity

VIES only tells you if a VAT number is valid. For Greek companies, BizList.gr gives you the full profile: activity codes, directors, shareholders, financials, public contracts, debts and sanctions.
