Revenue of Greek companies by regional unit and size category, 2025 (financial year 2024)
Median revenue by regional unit in the 2024 financial statements of Greek companies: €467,784 in Imathia, €96,086 in Lefkada, €238,589 nationwide. And within each size category of Law 4308/2014, which regional unit has the largest companies.

In the 2024 financial statements, the median revenue of a Greek company is €238,589. By regional unit, though, it ranges from €467,784 in Imathia to €96,086 in Lefkada, and Attica comes 18th out of 47.
The median, because it needs no choices
The mean does not work as a measure here. In the same financial statements 392 companies hold 45.3% of revenue, so the arithmetic mean describes the top and not the middle company. The median does not have this problem and, most importantly, I do not have to choose any threshold.
| regional unit | median revenue |
|---|---|
| Imathia | €467,784 |
| Boeotia | €431,825 |
| Xanthi | €332,210 |
| Drama | €325,341 |
| Zakynthos | €294,451 |
| Thessaloniki | €280,928 |
| Attica | €241,412 |
| Thesprotia | €172,328 |
| Corfu | €168,055 |
| Preveza | €161,963 |
| Kefalonia | €153,785 |
| Lefkada | €96,086 |
First is Imathia with €467,784. Its profile is fruit canning and packing, dozens of medium-sized plants instead of a few large ones. Second is Boeotia with €431,825. There the industrial zone of Oinofyta and Schimatari sits inside a regional unit with 689 companies, so it shows in full.
The same median on the map, for all 47 regional units:
No line between centre and periphery comes out. The high medians are scattered, from Imathia and Drama to Zakynthos and Heraklion, and Attica sits 18th. The Ionian Islands take both ends: Zakynthos is 5th, while Corfu, Kefalonia and Lefkada hold three of the last five places. The four grey regional units, Grevena, Evrytania, Florina and Phocis, have fewer than 150 companies with financial statements and were left out of the measurement. The full table of all 47 is at the end.
The interactive map on /top/ shows the other end of the same distribution: click on a regional unit to see its largest companies by revenue and by profit.
Same size, different regional unit
The median of a regional unit can be low because its companies are small, or because it has many small companies and few large ones. To separate the two, I split the companies by size and measured the median within each category.
The thresholds are not mine. They come from Greek Law 4308/2014, which transposes Directive 2013/34/EU and defines the size of an entity by net turnover.
| category | revenue | companies | median | highest | lowest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| micro | up to €700 thousand | 59,834 | €108,917 | Xanthi €155,760 | Arcadia €75,774 |
| small | up to €8 million | 22,484 | €1.76 million | Thesprotia €2.31 million | Kastoria €1.43 million |
| medium | up to €40 million | 3,621 | €13.78 million | Pieria €19.67 million | Lesbos €10.79 million |
| large | above €40 million | 1,004 | €78.30 million | Ioannina €97.75 million | Drama €53.21 million |
Within the same category the gap stays large: the typical micro company in Xanthi is twice the size of the one in Arcadia, €155,760 against €75,774. The cause is not the mix. It is size within the same layer.
And Attica? 24th among micro companies, 20th among small, 13th among medium-sized. It moves up only among large companies, where it is 7th with €85.49 million.
Where the large companies are
1,004 companies in the whole of Greece have revenue above €40 million, 1.15% of those that published financial statements.
| regional unit | companies |
|---|---|
| Attica | 731 |
| Thessaloniki | 77 |
| Heraklion | 20 |
| Larissa | 19 |
| Boeotia | 12 |
| Achaea | 12 |
| Kilkis | 10 |
| Ioannina | 8 |
Attica and Thessaloniki together have 80.5% of the large companies in Greece. Seven regional units have none: Ilia, Kastoria, Samos, Thesprotia, Chios, Preveza, Lefkada.
The same number as a share of each regional unit gives a different order:
| regional unit | large | % of the country's large companies | % of the regional unit's companies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kilkis | 10 | 1.00% | 3.28% |
| Drama | 7 | 0.70% | 2.27% |
| Xanthi | 6 | 0.60% | 2.01% |
| Boeotia | 12 | 1.20% | 1.74% |
| Attica | 731 | 72.81% | 1.60% |
Kilkis has the highest density of large companies in Greece, with ten out of 305. Attica has the largest volume, with 731. In density, Attica is fifth.
Where the revenue sits
In absolute numbers the picture turns around completely.
| regional unit | revenue | share |
|---|---|---|
| Attica | €202.99 billion | 71.04% |
| Thessaloniki | €22.12 billion | 7.74% |
| Heraklion | €6.48 billion | 2.27% |
| Larissa | €3.84 billion | 1.34% |
| Dodecanese | €3.76 billion | 1.32% |
| Achaea | €3.08 billion | 1.08% |
| Lefkada | €0.16 billion | 0.06% |
Two regional units make 78.8% of the €285.76 billion.
This is the whole finding, in two sentences. Attica is average in every size category: 18th on the median, 24th among micro companies, 20th among small ones. And at the same time it holds seven tenths of the country's revenue, because it has 45,552 companies instead of 689.
The full table
A dot means the regional unit has fewer than ten companies in the category, or fewer than five among large companies, so the median would swing with a single record.

Methodology
The source is the 2024 financial statements as published in GEMI, the Greek General Commercial Registry, as read and analysed by bizlist. Retrieved on 27 August 2026. Financial years that end within 2024, in euro, with a declared regional unit of the registered office.
Out go the 951 branches of foreign companies, which report €768.47 billion, two and a half times the whole sample, because they record the worldwide revenue of their parent. Out go the consolidated statements of listed companies, which count the same revenue twice, and the dormant companies with revenue below €2,000. This is the same population as in the article on the revenue distribution. 86,943 companies remain. The regional units of Grevena, Evrytania, Florina and Phocis, with fewer than 150 companies each, were removed from the ranking because the median swings with few records. 47 remain.
The size categories come from Law 4308/2014, which classifies by two of three criteria: total assets, turnover, average number of employees. Here only turnover is available. So a company with €50 million revenue and twelve employees goes into the large category, while under the law it is not large. The thresholds were borrowed from the law because no threshold comes out of the data: I tried caps from €1 to €100 million, and wherever you cut, what remains above holds a disproportionate share. At €100 million you cut less than half a percent of companies and throw away 43.3% of revenue.
The sample covers only companies with double-entry books, 8.2% of the active companies in the registry. None of the 676,257 active sole proprietorships is in it, and this is not neutral by regional unit: a tourist regional unit with hundreds of accommodation businesses run as sole proprietorships shows up only with its capital companies. And the regional unit is the registered office, not the place of activity: a chain with its registered office in Marousi books all its revenue in Attica. Whatever distortion exists works in favour of Attica, and Attica still comes 18th on the median.
