How many companies the average Greek is involved in
Four in five people with a role in a Greek company are in one only. But 2,132 people hold ten or more, and there the pattern reverses.

I took all 1,085,101 natural persons who hold at least one active role in a Greek company and counted how many companies each one is in.
For the average person in Greece the answer is dull: one. The interest is in the tail.
The distribution
| companies | people | share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 881,378 | 81.2% |
| 2 | 141,164 | 13.0% |
| 3 | 36,056 | 3.3% |
| 4 | 12,669 | 1.2% |
| 5 | 5,547 | 0.5% |
| 6 to 10 | 6,592 | 0.6% |
| 11 and over | 1,695 | 0.2% |
Four in five are in one company only. But 203,723 people hold two or more, and from there up the distribution does not fade out. It stretches.
| threshold | people |
|---|---|
| 2 and over | 203,723 |
| 3 and over | 62,559 |
| 5 and over | 13,835 |
| 10 and over | 2,132 |
| 25 and over | 225 |
| 50 and over | 37 |
| 100 and over | 4 |
The record is one person in 241 companies. I checked it because it looks like a data error. It is not. The profile has dozens of private companies (IKE) and energy communities, which are vehicle companies for renewable energy projects. One solar park, one company.
At the top the pattern reverses
In the general population of Greek businesses, the sole proprietorship dominates by a wide margin:
| legal form | active companies |
|---|---|
| Sole proprietorship | 669,167 |
| IKE | 114,956 |
| OE | 94,575 |
| EE | 91,077 |
| SA | 46,950 |
| EPE | 19,638 |
IKE is the private company, OE the general partnership, EE the limited partnership and EPE the limited liability company.
For the 2,132 people with ten or more companies, the picture turns upside down. Of the 24,557 companies they hold in total, only 706 are sole proprietorships, which is 3%.
| legal form | companies |
|---|---|
| IKE | 9,226 |
| SA | 6,846 |
| EE | 4,662 |
| OE | 1,419 |
| EPE | 643 |
| Energy community | 443 |
A sole proprietorship is by definition a one-person business: one VAT number (Greek tax ID), at most one active sole proprietorship. Anyone who reaches a two-digit number of companies has left it behind. IKE and SA together are 67% of what they hold.
The most common pair
For people with exactly two companies:
| combination | people |
|---|---|
| Sole proprietorship + EE | 23,165 |
| Sole proprietorship + OE | 21,860 |
| Sole proprietorship + IKE | 14,266 |
| EE + OE | 5,844 |
| EE + IKE | 4,987 |
| SA + IKE | 4,741 |
| SA + Sole proprietorship | 4,596 |
The top three combinations all include a sole proprietorship. The pattern continues further up. Of the 203,723 people with two or more companies, 107,242, which is 52.6%, still keep a sole proprietorship on the side.
The sole proprietorship does not close. It stays as a second activity, or simply because closing it costs money.
A combination we removed
The pairs showed 10,093 people with "sole proprietorship + sole proprietorship". These do not exist: one VAT number matches at most one active sole proprietorship. They are name-matching errors, two different people merged into one person.
They were removed from the chart and the table.
Methodology
Snapshot of 20/06/2026. Filters on everything: active roles, Greek legal forms only, natural persons only and not member companies.
The critical step is deduplication. Each natural person counts once, through a unique hash of the VAT number. Without this, the same person with a different spelling of the name in two companies counts as two people, and the distribution tilts artificially toward "one company".
We also cleaned out placeholder VAT numbers. Records with a very short or empty VAT number link hundreds of unrelated companies to one fake person. They would create imaginary champions at the top of the distribution.
What it does not say
A role does not mean ownership. The same bucket holds managers, partners, board members and legal representatives. A board member in five companies is not an entrepreneur with five businesses.
It does not measure size. Ten dormant IKEs and ten companies with revenue count the same.
Vehicle companies inflate the top. In renewable energy, one company per project is a rule of project finance, not a sign of business activity.
