How many Greek companies have a real website

In GEMI, the Greek business registry, 80,357 companies declared a website address. I opened them all: half are dead. The final number is 5 in 100.

Card “How many Greek businesses have a real website?”, analysis of 1,042,714 active Greek business registry records
Active companies in Greece 1,042,714
With a working website 54,324 5.2%
Declared websites that are dead 52%
Sole proprietorships with no website 98.7%

The question sounds simple until you try to measure it. What counts as a website?

In GEMI, the Greek General Commercial Registry, 80,357 of the 1,042,714 active Greek companies have declared a website address. If you stop there, the answer is 7.7%.

I opened all 80,357.

What I count as a website

An address counts as a working website if it loads, belongs to the company, and says what the company does. None of the three is a given.

what we found behind the declared addresses companies share
Working company page 33,692 42%
Dead or unreachable 41,780 52%
Parked, under construction, or another company's 1,923 2%
Only the page where financial statements are published 1,692 2%
Loads, but is not a company page 1,270 2%

Half of the declared addresses are dead.

The most interesting category is the fourth. 1,692 companies declared as their website the GEMI page where their financial statements are published. It is a correct answer to a form field and nothing more. If you do not separate them, they count as "has a website".

The number

Beyond the declared addresses, I also found addresses that were never declared, from email domains and from brand names. The total:

companies share of active
Has a website address, declared or found 103,800 10.0%
Has a working website 54,324 5.2%

5 in 100 Greek companies have a website that works. One in 19.

The 5.2% is a floor, not an estimate. The profiling reached a steady state. The residual of ~1,600 sites are thin pages or JavaScript shells that return fewer than 5,000 bytes to the scrape. So they are not profiled and stay in the non-working group. The number can only go up a little.

Who has one and who does not

Legal form is the strongest divider:

Share of Greek companies with a working website, by legal form
SA (AE)22.9%Private company (IKE)18.0%LLC (EPE)15.1%General partnership (OE)6.3%Limited partnership (EE)5.4%Sole proprietorship1.3%

legal formwith website
SA (AE)22.9%
Private company (IKE)18.0%
LLC (EPE)15.1%
General partnership (OE)6.3%
Limited partnership (EE)5.4%
Sole proprietorship1.3%

An SA is about 18 times more likely to have a website than a sole proprietorship.

Revenue gives the same picture even more clearly:

revenue with a working website
No published financials 2.7%
Under €50,000 14.5%
€50,000 to €200,000 23.5%
€200,000 to €1 million 31.3%
€1 to €5 million 40.0%
Over €5 million 52.3%

Even at the top, half of the companies with revenue over €5 million have no working website.

The 666,839 invisible ones

Sole proprietorships number 666,839, which is 64% of all active businesses. 98.7% of them have no working website.

The largest group in the Greek economy by number of businesses is almost entirely offline. Whatever any analysis of the "online Greek economy" shows, it says very little about them.

Where the online economy is

The ~54,000 companies with a working website, by sector:

sector share of online companies
Trade, wholesale and retail 22.4%
Tourism and food service 13.3%
Professional services 11.9%
Real estate and construction 11.0%
Manufacturing 10.2%
Other 9.1%
IT and media 7.9%
Health and education 4.5%
Transport and logistics 3.4%
Finance 3.3%
Energy and environment 2.9%

One in five online companies is a trader. One in seven is in tourism or food service.

Based on the content of the same pages, 38% target businesses, 27% target consumers, and 34% target both. The part of the Greek economy that has a website leans toward B2B.

Methodology

Base: active companies with a registered office in Greece, 1,042,714 in the snapshot of 17 June 2026.

"Has a website" means an address declared in GEMI or found from an email domain or a brand name. "Working" means that the page loaded, was identified as the company page of that specific company, and describes its activity. A model classifies each page from its text, not from rules on the HTTP status.

All numbers are direct counts in the database. No projection, no sample.

The 205 financial statement publication pages that had first passed as working were reclassified by hand and removed.

What these numbers do not say

They do not say how many businesses have an online presence. A Google Business profile or an active Instagram account is not a website and is not counted here. For a tavern or a repair shop it may well be enough.

They do not say that the website brings in business. It measures existence and whether the site works, not traffic or revenue.

The sector breakdown covers ~53,500 of the 54,324, the ones with a classified main activity code (KAD, the Greek extension of NACE).
